Nikon is developing a dedicated cinema family called the NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV series. The upcoming lineup will feature 9 lenses built with large image circles to cover RED digital cinema sensors alongside high precision auto focus. The project begins with a 50mm T1.9 VV prime, marking the first time Nikon cinema glass expands beyond standard full frame dimensions.
Nikon confirmed that these optics are engineered specifically for high end film sets and commercial productions. The defining technical achievement is support for the massive 40.96mm by 21.60mm image sensor found inside the RED V RAPTOR X VV camera. Since Nikon completed its acquisition of RED, filmmakers have wanted native glass that bridges both hardware ecosystems. This new series fulfills that demand by offering complete coverage for formats significantly wider than traditional 35mm sensors.
Cinema glass usually relies exclusively on manual focus rings, but Nikon is taking a different route by adding advanced auto focus motors. The internal drive system is tuned for high accuracy to streamline solo operation and fast paced video production environments. While 9 individual focal lengths are currently in development, Nikon only revealed the 50mm T1.9 VV prime so far. Details regarding launch pricing, retail availability, and the remaining 8 focal lengths remain unannounced.
