NVIDIA Launches DLSS 5 with 3D Guided Neural Rendering

NVIDIA has officially unveiled DLSS 5, introducing a graphics technology called 3D Guided Neural Rendering. The new software pipeline moves beyond basic upscaling to generate photorealistic lighting and realistic material interactions directly inside game engines. The feature makes its public debut in NBA 2K27 exclusively for GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware and GeForce NOW cloud rigs.

Standard generative AI models tend to produce random results. That will not work during fast gameplay. If a character face shifts slightly every second, the illusion breaks immediately. DLSS 5 avoids this issue by anchoring its neural network directly to the geometry, motion vectors, and textures supplied by the game engine. It operates on a strict 1 frame in, 1 frame out pipeline. This design allows the local AI model to render complex light scattering through skin, natural hair highlights, and sharp contact shadows without warping the underlying 3D assets.

Game artists retain direct control over how the enhancements appear on screen. Developers can adjust Structure Intensity to deepen ambient shadows or modify Tone Intensity to change overall color response. Semantic AI masking also lets development teams apply visual upgrades to background environments while keeping character faces untouched. Visual Concepts applied these exact tools inside NBA 2K27 to replicate the visual presentation of actual sports broadcasts.

NVIDIA claims the internal AI model achieved a 5X performance gain during development, allowing the feature to run smoothly on a single graphics card. In NBA 2K27 running at 4K resolution with Ultra settings and ray tracing enabled, the flagship RTX 5090 hits up to 370 FPS when combined with frame generation. At 1440p resolution, performance climbs to 590 FPS on the RTX 5090, 410 FPS on the RTX 5080, and 260 FPS on the base RTX 5070. Unlocking the feature requires installing the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver and turning on the neural rendering toggle in the display settings menu.
