Samsung Expands Memory Module Outsourcing to Prioritize AI Chips

Samsung Electronics is moving to outsource a larger share of its standard memory module production to external manufacturing partners. The company wants to offload routine assembly for DDR5 modules and solid state drives to free up clean room space for high end AI semiconductors. Domestic packaging capacity at its South Korean facilities remains under heavy pressure.

Factory space is at a premium. According to a report from Korean technology outlet The Elec, Samsung faces a serious shortage of semiconductor clean room space and packaging equipment. Running everyday assembly lines at its Onyang and Cheonan facilities has become an inefficient use of limited floor space. Management plans to reallocate those domestic facilities toward advanced packaging for high bandwidth memory and custom artificial intelligence hardware.

Contract manufacturing partners are stepping in to fill the gap. Companies including Dreamtech, HANYANGDGT, and SFA Semiconductor are taking on larger production runs for standard memory products. These 3 partners are currently building out additional assembly capacity across India, Vietnam, and the Philippines to handle the incoming workload.

The move gives Samsung more breathing room to scale its high margin chip business. As global demand for artificial intelligence hardware accelerates, allocating internal resources to basic module assembly limits growth. Shifting standard module production overseas lets Samsung focus its top domestic engineers and machinery on next generation semiconductor packaging.
