Chery has introduced the Volt dragon ultra fast charging station, promising to deliver 500 kilometers of range in 5 minutes. The system outputs a peak capacity of 1.44 MW to compete directly with high power charging networks from BYD, Geely, and HUAWEI. Chery plans an initial rollout of 100 stations across 10 Chinese cities, with broader vehicle compatibility details still unconfirmed.
Chery builds the Volt dragon platform around silicon carbide electronics and immersion liquid cooling. The setup achieves an electrical conversion efficiency of 96.5% between the power grid and the vehicle connector. The charging cable and connector weigh roughly 2 kg, while operating sound levels remain below 50 dBA. This design allows drivers to handle the plug easily without facing loud background noise.
In testing, the 1.44 MW station refilled an electric vehicle battery from 10 to 97% in 6 minutes 50 seconds. This speed places the system near the third generation CATL Shenxing battery, which completed a 10 to 98% charge in 6 minutes 27 seconds. It outpaces both the Geely Energee Golden Brick at 8 minutes 42 seconds and the BYD Blade Battery 2.0 at roughly 9 minutes. Chery has not specified which vehicle models support these speeds, but the system requires electrical architectures operating at 800V or higher.
The stations incorporate a robotic arm for automatic connection and support Vehicle to Grid power flow, allowing cars to push electricity back to the grid. An artificial intelligence system called CheryMind oversees system operations, though technical specifics remain undisclosed. Chery will announce further deployment plans before the end of 2026. The automaker targets global installation of over 20000 Volt dragon stations with Vehicle to Grid capabilities by 2029.
