Gears of War E Day Production Budget Reportedly Surpasses $500 Million

Microsoft spent over $500 million developing Gears of War E Day before factoring in marketing expenses. The big budget shooter opened with strong critical praise but moved only 230,000 standalone units during its first week according to Kotaku report. With roughly 1.7 million players accessing the game through Game Pass, Microsoft faces an uphill climb to turn a profit on its half billion dollar investment.

The internal production budget allegedly climbed past earlier industry estimates. Prior reports from insider Tom Henderson pegged the development spending at over $400 million, a figure questioned by Windows Central reporter Jez Corden. Kotaku sources now indicate the final production tally pushed past $500 million. Microsoft has avoided commenting on internal spending figures.

Early commercial data reveals slow direct sales for the title. Alinea Analytics estimates first week revenue at $37 million across 230,000 unit sales. A portion of that revenue stems from Game Pass users paying a $30 surcharge for early access. An additional 1.7 million subscribers downloaded the game without buying a copy, diluting direct sales and complicating calculations of its actual profitability.

Microsoft opted to keep the shooter exclusive to Xbox consoles rather than releasing on competitor systems. Kotaku estimates that a PlayStation 5 launch matching the pace of the Gears of War Reloaded remaster would have added just $33 million in revenue. That extra income would barely dent a $500 million deficit, yet it reopens debate over whether keeping big budget titles inside a closed hardware ecosystem remains viable.
