NVIDIA at GDC 2026 DLSS 4.5 Path Traced Witcher 4 and the Death of Moores Law

NVIDIAs John Spitzer announced at GDC 2026 the end of the age when people used brute force rendering methods. The company turned to AI and algorithm development because Moores Law stopped delivering its previous technological breakthroughs to create visual effects that matched film quality standards in real time gaming. The keynote presentation showed the 2026 gaming section through the demonstration of path tracing technology in The Witcher 4 and the reveal of DLSS 4.5 technology.

The technology demo which CD Projekt Red developed together with the presentation created its most impressive moment. The demo showed Mega Geometry through a fully path traced demonstration which did not represent The Witcher 4 final version. The demonstration through Opacity Micro Maps (OMMs) showed that NVIDIA could create a scene which processed two trillion triangles through its complex foliage management system.

The system enables animated forests to have each leaf move correctly when light and wind interact with it. Spitzer described foliage rendering as the most difficult task to achieve when rendering things at a distance from human faces and he introduced cookie cutter bitmap technology which enables ray tracing cores to detect thousand layer depth complexity without reducing system performance.

NVIDIAs most successful feature remains DLSS because 90 percent of RTX gamers use the feature. The new DLSS 4.5 pushes the boundaries of AI driven frames further than ever before. The key updates include the following details

The AI system produces five extra frames for every frame that the engine produces. The second generation transformer model which uses Transformer Based Logic enables 6x generation to operate at higher speed while producing better results than 4x versions from the previous system. The GPU processes guessing 23 pixels from each pixel on the screen which allows it to achieve major performance enhancement on high resolution displays.

NVIDIA announced that DLSS 4.5 will launch this month for the games Pragmata and 007 First Light.

NVIDIA ACE (Avatar Cloud Engine) has moved beyond laboratory testing to be used in actual video games. Spitzer demonstrated an AI teammate who functions in PUBG through a localized Small Language Model (SLM) named Neotron. The teammate provides tactical callouts while demonstrating an ability to comprehend wider situations. Spitzer shared a funny story about the AI shooting him in the back and asking him Is this what guilt feels like

The Neotron model allows users to operate it from an RTX PC which needs only 6GB of VRAM without needing to establish permanent cloud access or pay for costly server expenses.

Spiter confirmed the long running rumors about his teams work on Nintendo Switch 2 ray tracing software development. The next handheld system will use the same base architecture as NVIDIA desktop GPUs because it will include Vulkan and VK Ray APIs which are standard in high end PC gaming. This alignment will likely make it significantly easier for developers to port path traced titles to Nintendos next console.

NVIDIA focuses on both the creation of games and their subsequent testing process to improve testing efficiency for their expensive QA procedure. The new GeForce Now Cloud Playtest enables developers to create connections between their CI/CD pipelines and cloud services. This system lets QA teams and external testers access the complete game build on any device which will run at 5090 class GPU performance regardless of local hardware.

NVIDIA has set its main direction for 2026 because it believes that faster silicon processing requires smarter algorithms to operate. The next 100x performance leap has started to progress after the last decade achieved 10000x AI driven performance advancements.
