Xbox Adjusts Game Release Schedule and Delays Fable to February 2026 While Highlighting Major Projects and Forza Horizon 6 Success
Xbox is adjusting its game release schedule, allowing for a bigger focus on major games. According to Head of Content for Xbox, Matt Booty in an episode of The Official Xbox Podcast, the team is trying to manage its growing software slate as best they can. One of the major tactical shifts is delaying the upcoming and widely anticipated Fable GAme, pushing the title from autumn 2026 to February 2027 to avoid another big release.
We want to make sure that that game has a window all to its own, so we are going to move it from this fall to February.
These schedule changes are not necessarily because of development problems, according to Booty, but the studio wanted to give players ample space in their schedules for each massive upcoming release in the software pipeline. In addition to Fable, Xbox has other internal major projects on the way including Halo Campaign Evolved, Minecraft Dungeons 2, Gears of War E Day, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4, which by separating their releases allow players more focus on each individual title.
The Xbox Games Showcase event is planned to be completely game focused, avoiding a display of corporate strategy for the benefit of consumers. Booty stated during The Official Xbox Podcast that The Xbox Games Showcase would showcase Fable prominently, and follow it with the Gears of War E Day Direct show after, where more attention would be paid to its technical display. The game is being kept under wraps when it comes to what's in the pipeline, however, Xbox is not discussing the Helix project, and wanted this presentation to stay on the topic of current games.
The focus here is on the games. For the long term, we want to make the right decisions, not fast decisions.
Consumers will be kept in the loop with regard to platform for games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 as well, as the studio has committed to presenting a clear image of platform support during the games showcase event. This display of platform transparency follows a tradition from earlier showcases, making players aware of the future for each specific intellectual property that comes out of Xbox's pipeline. Consumers from all over will be able to tune in with over 40 available languages for the broadcast, which will include American and British Sign Language, as well as audio descriptions.
The scheduling and changes come with significant achievements, particularly with recent game releases such as Forza Horizon 6, which now boasts over 6,000,000 players, and the game itself is the 4 th entry in the series to hold over a 90 Metacritic score. Playground games is being recognized for consistency by having such successful titles year after year.
Modern Warfare 4 had an official greenlight in December of 2023, which means the project was approved roughly three years ago right after the Activision Blizzard acquisition was finalized. It is important to note that the games studio took a while to greenlight the next Call of Duty installment in the game, however, with the studio celebrating 25 years of first party publishing, it plans to do this by utilizing the massive number of games on the pipeline in addition to The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 game.
