TCL Introduces P80 Series with First NXTPAPER AMOLED Panels

TCL has revealed its latest P80 smartphone family, bringing its eye comfort display technology to organic light emitting panels for the first time. The P80 Ultra pairs a 6.83 inch NXTPAPER AMOLED screen with a 50MP telephoto zoom lens and a physical reading mode switch. European sales have opened immediately, with prices spanning from 349 euros for the standard model up to 549 euros for the Ultra.

Up until now, TCL only offered its NXTPAPER tech on LCD panels. That changes today. The P80 Ultra gets a 6.83 inch AMOLED screen pushing 1.5K resolution with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 3200 nits. TCL also fixed a common problem with outdoor reading by adding circular polarization. You can look at the screen while wearing polarized sunglasses without the image blacking out.

To make the display feel like actual paper, TCL stacked Nano Crystal Shield Glass on top with a light scattering layer that blends red, green, and blue subpixels. It kills harsh reflections in bright sunlight. Flipping the dedicated physical switch on the side engages Max Ink mode. This strips down the interface into an e reader layout, puts background processes to sleep, and silences notifications. TCL claims you can get 7 full days of continuous reading from a single charge in this state. An integrated AI tool can also convert electronic books into spoken audio files.

Under the hood, the P80 Ultra runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite processor with 8GB of LPDDR5 memory and either 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The 5800mAh battery supports 45W wired charging. On the back, you get a 50MP main sensor paired with a 50MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and an 8MP ultra wide lens. TCL promises 4 major Android version upgrades and 7 full years of security patches.

TCL is also launching 2 cheaper options alongside the flagship. The P80 Pro keeps the exact same 6.83 inch NXTPAPER AMOLED screen and core processor but drops the dedicated telephoto zoom camera. Below that sits the standard P80, which has a glossy 6.83 inch 120Hz AMOLED panel without the matte treatment. It also gets 3 Android OS upgrades instead of 4, though security support remains at 7 years.

Pricing across Europe sits at 349 euros for the base P80, 429 euros for the P80 Pro, and 549 euros for the top tier P80 Ultra.
